Salafis misinterpretation of Hadeeth | Sahih, Zaeef, and Mawdu

Classification of Hadeeth

Some Muslims (Generally Speaking Pseudo-salafis – Ahle Hadees ) treat weak Hadith in the same way as fabricated or very weak narrations, this approach contradicts the view of the Imams of Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jamaa’h (including Ulama e Deoband).

This is a new phenomenal , and is not the way of the Salaf.

A a widely held but incorrect belief is that weak hadeeth’s have no value in Islam, this is an false misconception on the part of  well to-do Muslims who have foolishly bought into the ‘Sahih only’ mentality of the Salafi’s (Ahle Hadees).

Propagated by the Dollar Rich Salafi movement, at its head being Sheikh Nasir al-Albani (May Allah Most High have mercy on him), Islamic (Salafi) University of Madinah, use of Print & Digital technology (Web, Youtube, FAcebook, Instagram), the movements has spread to all corners of the globe

Taba’een & Taba‘ at-Tābi‘een

From the Taba’een (1st generation muslims) and Taba‘ at-Tābi‘īn (2nd generation) muslims), the classifications of hadiths have existed. The 3 classification of hadeeth are Sahih (authentic), Da’if (weak), and Maudu (fabricated, not true, a lie).

The Maudu (fabricated) hadeeth, is not actually a hadeeth,  it is untrue and not to be relied upon in any scenario, and should not be followed.

That leaves then 2 types of hadith, Sahih (authentic) and Da’if (weak).

In a Da’if (weak) hadeeth, its something that cannot be proven to not have been said by the Prophet Muhammad  مُحَمَّد ﷺ.

The probability that Prophet Muhammad  مُحَمَّد ﷺ having said is far greater , than the probability that Prophet Muhammad  مُحَمَّد ﷺ did not say it…

Its Da’if (weak) because the margin of error is greater than Sahih or hasan.

Another way to look at Da’if (weak) hadeeth is;

Not all weak hadiths are the same. 5 conditions need to be met for a hadith to be sahih (authentic). Missing only one condtion makes it weak. But missing two would make it weaker. Missing three and it’s very weak. Missing four and its threadbare. The absence of multiple links in the chain is greater than missing only one name in the chain. So when you hear the word “da’if” you have to ask, how da’if?

Upgrading a Da’if (weak), because mutliple hadeeth exists on the same subject, meaning;

if there are multiple Da’if (weak) hadeeth on the same subject, then the collectivity of the meaning of the hadeeth , can potentially strengthen each other to a level of acceptance known as Hasan Lighayrihi (fair due to other narrations), why, because the probability of that been correct is greater…

Imam Bukhari & Da’if (weak) Hadeeth – Amir al-Mu’minin fi al-Hadith (Leader of the Believers in Hadith)

The principle view  petro-dollor funded Pseudo-salafis – Ahle Hadees is

Da’eef Narration: In the principles of Hadith, A Da’eef narration is a form of “Non-Acceptable” and “Mardood (Rejected)” hadith.

If according to petro-dollor funded Pseudo-salafis – Ahle Hadees a Da’if (weak)  hadeeth is “Non-Acceptable” and “Mardood (Rejected)” hadith, then why did Imam Bukhari include Di’af (Weak) or unknown credibiliy hadeeth’s in his other great work Al-Tareekh Al-Kabeer.

Let me say this again, Imam Bukhari, is famous for his sahih al-bukhari , and the (Ahle Hadees  love to Quote Imam Bukhari all Day & Night) which only contain sahih hadeeths (ie authentic), but his other great book is Al-Tareekh Al-Kabeer contains Da’if (weak) hadeeth’s.

If Da’if (weak)  hadeeth is “Non-Acceptable” and “Mardood (Rejected) then why did Imam include them in his other books.

Example

Beware of envy (jealousy), for envy (jealousy) devours good (deeds) like fire devours firewood. Weak; “Al-Tareekh Al-Kabeer”

Grade: Da’if (Darussalam)

Sunan Ibn Majah 4210

Furthermore Imam al-Bukhari’s compilation of Adab al-Mufrad, also vontains Da’if (weak) hadeeth, this is further proof, that Imam al-Bukhari (Master of Hadeeth Collector’s) permitted the use of Da’if (weak) hadeeth, in non aqeeda (core) Beliefs

Did Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah reject all weak Hadiths?

The answer is NO, BIG NO.

Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (towering figure of ahle sunnah wal jamaa’h), in his book Kalim al-Tayyib permitted, used Da’if (weak) hadeeth in the area of fadail e amaal (virtues of deeds). So if it acceptable for Imam Ibn Taymiyyah to use Da’if (weak) for encouraging good deeds and discouraging evil , then why is it such a problem for Nasiruddin al-Albani, and fellow Salafi’s of today not to do the same.

Renowned Scholor’s or Collectors of Hadith (Muhaddithin)

In the last 100 years, there has been a common misconception that Da’if (weak) hadith have no application, no relevance or usefulness at all.

But very famous, most renowned Scholor’s or Collectors of Hadith (often called Muhaddithin) like

  1. Ibn Majah (d. 887),
  2. Abu Dawud (d. 889),
  3. Tirmidhi (d. 892),
  4. Nasai (d. 915)

have included sahih, as well as Da’if (weak) in their vast collections of hadith’s. If  Da’if (weak) is such a bad thing, as made of by petro-dollor funded Pseudo-salafis – Ahle Hadees, then why have Da’if (weak) been included in great collections of hadeeth by esteamed scholor’s of hadeeth from the early days of Islam.

hadeeth grading

If the Salaf Generation ie the earliest muslim’s after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  مُحَمَّد  and Sahaba (RAD), like Ibn Majah (d. 887), Abu Dawud (d. 889), Tirmidhi (d. 892),  & Nasai (d. 915) can accept weak hadeeth in certain conditions, then why has it become such a big issue for Salafi’s 1400 years later.

Are weak Hadith always rejected?

There is an attack on Da’if (weak) hadeeth in our times by by petro-dollor funded Pseudo-salafis – Ahle Hadees. But this has not always been the case.

According to Imam al-Nawawi and other great scholars of Hadith, there is agreement amongst the scholars that weak Hadith are used for certain aspects of the Deen. Weak Hadith cannot be used for the fundamentals of creed (Aqeedah) or legal rulings, but can be used for less significant issues.

al-Sihah al-Sitta (The Authentic Six)

In Islam, after the Holy Quran, there are the al-Sihah al-Sitta (The Authentic Six), in arabic referred to as “Al-Kutub AlSittah“. The 6 been

  1. Imam al-Bukhaari
  2. Imam Muslim
  3. Imam Abu Dawood
  4. Imam al-Tirmidhi
  5. Imam al-Nasaa’i
  6. Imaam Ibn Maajah

Imam al-Bukhaari & Imam Muslim only included Sahih Hadeeth in their respective Collections, but the other 4 included sahih as well as Da’if (weak) in their ‘Authentic’ collections.
